Lead by magnetic frontman Samuel T. Herring, Baltimore new wave heroes Future Islands bring their propulsive, urgent synth-pop back to Australia for their blistering debut performance at the Sydney Opera House.

Cult synth-pop heroes make their Sydney Opera House debut

All the music and melodrama of beloved American synth rockers Future Islands comes to the Concert Hall this February, as the Baltimore cult favourites make their long awaited return to Australia after six years for their Sydney Opera House debut.

Lead by powerhouse vocalist Samuel T. Herring, whose cathartic stage presence can spin on a dime from heartache to ecstasy, the new wave four-piece emerged from a decade as indie’s best-kept secret to national phenomena after their 2014 television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman, where their wild performance of breakthrough smash “Seasons (Waiting on You)” – which Pitchfork would name among the greatest songs of the decade – broke the internet and drew praise from fans including Bono, Debbie Harry and even acclaimed writer Haruki Murakami.

The band’s sweeping melodies, lyrical daring and arena-ready synth-pop were honed across acclaimed albums like 2017’s The Far Field and 2020’s As Long As You Are, while their stage shows – transformative performances of visceral power – blew audiences away wherever they toured. Prepare yourself for an unforgettable night of soaring songs, apocalyptic emotions and dancing with rapturous abandon.
