“Underneath Your Spell” – Tina Harrod

Please welcome back to CAMELOT LOUNGE… Aria-award Recipient Ms Tina Harrod!!

Tina, the performer known for her amazing dynamic vocal range, is a singer/songwriter from Sydney. Her awards, nominations and critical acclaim see her as one of Australia’s most highly regarded vocalists and songwriters.

Growing as an artist with each of her releases she has achieved what all singers and musicians strive for, an authenticity through her insights, musical technique and story-telling ability that see her different characters weaving their way through the bars of her songs, just like her audience weave their way through the bars where she plays.

“Now Harrod didn’t occupy the stage, she prowled it, staring her audience in the eyes. Where that edginess had made her seem somewhat ill-at-ease before, now it was fully harnessed, and line after line, song after song, crackled with electricity”. Club 505 – John Shand SMH

Her second album Worksongs was a set of Jazz standards and covers that won her the Jazz Bell Award for best female vocal and the Australian Independent Recording Association’s best Jazz Album and it cemented her as one of Australia’s great singers through her compelling interpretations of jazz classics and iconic pop songs. The band on the recording featured three of Australia’s greatest musicians, Jonathan Zwartz on double bass, Matt McMahon on piano & Hamish Stuart on drums.

Tina went on to record more original, Avant-gard music with other musicians but she never forgot her roots and so it is with great pleasure to announce that she is back with her powerhouse trio to present a night of music where she pays homage to Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, James Taylor, Van Morrison, Nina Simone, Renee Geyer & more..

”The instrumental sections were just as intense. Pianist Matt McMahon’s ability to combine ravishing melodic invention with turbo-charged propulsion made for thrilling solos, Bassist Jonathan Zwartz and drummer Hamish Stuart, already the local benchmark for deepening grooves or making the music fly, continue to raise their own bar..” Club 505 – John Shand SMH

This will no doubt, be a night to remember.

REIVEWS:

Worksongs

The power of Nina Simone with the expression of Billie Holiday, yet Harrod’s individuality is never compromised.” – The Australian 2008

Temporary People

“lf a record as good as this were released on a major label in the US, there’d be talk of a new Billie or Bessie, a neo Nina or another Ella. And while all four of those legendary American singers have certainly influenced “Australia’s Tina Harrod”, she has something none of them ever really had – the ability to totally reinvent herself.” –

Phil Stafford, The Courier Mail, November 21-22, 2009

The Revolution is Eternal

“This album is a miracle. Like Eartha Kitt in a contemporary context, blowing your mind with its lyrical and luscious sonic capability, Harrod’s voice cuts through your day/emotions/love/stress/panic/ennui and gives the gift of musical ascension”.

City of Longing

”Dazzlingly innovative arrangements produce an edgy and overarching cinematic resonance that strikes a cohesive balance between mainstream and art-house music. A set of impressive depth and diversity, displaying all the hallmarks of album excellence..” Tony Hillier, The Australian 2018 ★★★★½

…”This is the album Tina Harrod had in her all along. Here there’s no attempt to be something, whether an R&B singer, a jazz singer or anything else. Here she just is. Their jointly-penned songs defy categorisation and continually jolt the listener with improbable musical leaps – not to be arty for the sake of it, but simply to maximise each song’s potentiaL” John Shand, SMH 2018. ★★★★½

..”this album finds Harrod exploring every corner of and beyond soul/R&B, her connection to them operating in such a freewheeling way that stylistic differences disappear and a personal vision emerges..” Bernard Zuel
